Department of Social Services NSW

the challenge

The Department of Social Services NSW required an Aboriginal Cultural Awareness and Capability training program with a local First Nations focus. They were also looking for a program that provided the incorporation of scenarios that are relevant to the organisation.

the solution

YarnnUp tailored a First Nations program with a NSW focus whereby participants could ask questions about how to best navigate specific Aboriginal cultural situations when engaging with local clients, employees and other service providers. YarnnUp engaged some respect community Elders as part of our due diligence to ensure the content could be generalised across various communities with the NSW region.

the outcome

Outstanding feedback from all participants including the directors of the organisation who attended the first session. Many commented that it was the first time they had seen such an approach blending two worlds providing such valuable insight. We were able to have a significant impact with a limited budget from the client which restricted the opportunity for a broader rollout. We are looking forward to future sessions to expand the scope of this program across the organisation.
