Alcon, a global leader in eye care, sought to integrate meaningful cultural elements into their Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). The company wanted an artwork that symbolised its reconciliation journey and visually aligned with their core values of “Brilliant Lives, Brilliant Innovation, and Brilliant Planet.” Additionally, Alcon needed creative content to support the launch of their RAP, amplifying their commitment to reconciliation through visual storytelling.
YarnnUp Collective worked collaboratively with Alcon from the ground up, beginning with an envisioning session to develop a foundational artwork narrative. This narrative connected Alcon’s Reflect RAP goals with traditional cultural motifs, ensuring the artwork would align deeply with both the company’s vision and Aboriginal storytelling.
We partnered with Elaine Chambers-Hegarty, an Aboriginal Graphic Designer and Artist with cultural links to the Koa (Guwa), Kuku Yalanji, and Barada Barna peoples. Elaine’s art brings together ancestral themes and imagery through a modern lens to create rich, thought-provoking and emotive artworks. Her artistic expression is grounded in her cultural heritage and inspired by her deep love for her family and heritage. Elaine drew upon her personal heritage and the collective symbolism of Aboriginal linework and circles to bring Alcon’s journey to life. The artwork featured a vibrant colour palette inspired by gemstones, reflecting Alcon’s vision to help the world “See Brilliantly.”
To amplify the artwork’s impact, we produced an animated video that used the artwork as a central theme. The animation was a key communication tool for launching the RAP, helping tell Alcon’s story in a compelling and accessible way.
To ensure consistent usage of the new artwork, we provided Alcon with a comprehensive artwork guidelines document. These guidelines helped Alcon integrate the visual elements into their reconciliation communications effectively and respectfully, ensuring the artwork remained a central and cohesive part of their brand story.
Finally, we designed the Reflect RAP document, embedding the artwork throughout as a foundational visual element. This cohesive design approach ensured that every page of the RAP communicated Alcon’s commitment to reconciliation in both word and image.
The partnership between YarnnUp Collective and Alcon led to the creation of a culturally rich artwork that became the cornerstone of Alcon’s Reflect RAP. The animation video played a crucial role during the launch, effectively engaging both internal and external stakeholders. The artwork guidelines provided a clear framework for maintaining cultural integrity, and the RAP design showcased Alcon’s values and journey, creating an enduring impression.
Through this project, Alcon successfully embedded Aboriginal narratives into their corporate identity, fostering a greater connection with First Nations communities and reinforcing their dedication to making a positive impact in eye care and reconciliation.
