Aboriginal Languages Trust Annual Reports: Significant Designs that Honour First Nations Voices.

The Aboriginal Languages Trust (ALT) is dedicated to preserving and revitalising Aboriginal languages across New South Wales. Their work is essential in ensuring that the voices of Elders and communities are heard, and that language – a critical piece of cultural identity – is passed on to future generations. 

In July 2022, ALT set out to produce its first-ever Annual Report to be tabled in the Parliament of New South Wales, covering the period from July 2022 to July 2023. This report needed to convey the Trust’s purpose and achievements in an impactful, culturally resonant way, while also meeting strict accessibility and legislative standards.

YarnnUp Collective was honoured to be entrusted with this significant project. We took on full project management, overseeing every aspect of the report’s development – from content creation to auditing resources, and designing the final product. The design was crafted to be true to the ALT brand while also adhering to parliamentary accessibility guidelines.

The visual style of the report was inspired by the powerful artwork, ‘Voice of Country‘ by Gumbaynggirr and Bundjalung artist Amy Allerton. Led by this beautiful artwork, we created a design that balanced organic, vibrant elements with a structured and accessible format, reflecting the richness of Aboriginal culture while ensuring the report was easy to navigate for a diverse audience.

The Annual Report was successfully tabled in the Parliament of New South Wales in early 2024, marking a significant milestone for ALT. The final product, resulted in a publication that was visually engaging, culturally resonant, and accessible to all audiences.
